Debra Jean Mulrain, 63, of Tomah, died Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
She was born to Reuben and Verna (Paul) Dake on February 17, 1955, in Milwaukee.
Debra’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. After moving to Tomah, she became a member of the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Priscilla Mission Circle, worked with students in the school, and also served the church in many other ways. Debra lived her life in the grace of God and as a reflection of the love of Christ.
Education was important to Debra. She was the first person to graduate from college in her family. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from UW-Milwaukee. She furthered her education and eventually earned a master’s degree in Servant Leadership from Viterbo University.
Equally as important to Debra was her family. She met her husband, Patrick, in a botany class in college. They were united in marriage on December 17, 1977. Together they enjoyed Deb’s favorite “job,” raising two boys, Tim and Dan. Debra was especially excited to know that she would be a grandmother in July.
Debra worked as a registered nurse for 30 years. She began her career at St. Mary’s Hospital of Milwaukee, where she worked on medical-surgical, oncology, and hospice units. Later she transferred to the home health care unit and eventually became the director of one of the first home healthcare agencies in Milwaukee, providing healthcare to residents across the city. After moving to Tomah, she worked at the Tomah Veterans Hospital as a head nurse in the long-term care unit. She soon took on the role of Patient Advocate, where she worked tirelessly to ensure veterans received the high quality care they deserved. After retiring from the Tomah VA, she volunteered as a nurse for the St. Clare Health Mission in La Crosse.
Active in retirement, she volunteered as a pre-k aid at St Paul Lutheran School. She was a member of the Hungry Minds Book Club and the UW Extension Strong Women group. She enjoyed spending her time reading, traveling, working in her garden, visiting with friends and relatives, and baking cookies.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Patrick, her son Timothy and daughter-in-law Carrie, and son Daniel as well as her mother, Verna, and her sister Diane.
Special friends include Sue McWilliams of Phoenix, AZ, Charles McPeters and Donna Dean of Union, KY, and Jeff and Rita Puttkammer of Tomah.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018, 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave. Pastor William King will officiate. The burial will take place at a later date.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, May 31, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St. Tomah, and at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the church service. Online condolences may be sent to www.sonnenburgfamilyfh.com.
