NAPOLEON--Ê Deacon Howard J. Hunkler , 91, Napoleon, died Sept. 21, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

A rosary will be said at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by a prayer service at 7, at the funeral home.

Howard Joseph Hunkler was born on the original homestead of his parents, John and Frederica (Buck) Hunkler on July 5, 1909. Along with three brothers and five sisters, he grew up on the homestead farm that he would eventually build into a very successful farming and ranching operation.

Howard attended a one-room country school two miles west of the farm until the eighth grade. This concluded his formal education. Howard always said the rest of his education was in the "school of life." His whole life he was an avid reader and was very learned in many areas, but was most interested in his Catholic faith and was a convert to Catholicism as a young adult.

His whole family eventually converted to Catholicism, as did his future wife, Hertha Matilda Mathews, who he married on Nov. 27, 1941, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake. His brother, the Rev. Adam Hunkler , who was the pastor there, officiated. Of this union, 12 children were born; 10 children are still living, two children died in infancy. Along with the hard work of farming and ranching, after having lost everything during the depression years, Howard and Hertha built a very successful Hereford ranch and also did some farming.

Howard was very active in the local Highland School Board, township boards and Right to Life action groups. He was a lifetime member of the Napoleon Knights of Columbus. He also led or was part of church study groups, was chairman of the building committee when St. Philip built its new church in the late 1960s, and served on the parish council at St. Philip.

Howard's attitude of service to his church led him to be ordained as a permanent deacon for St. Philip in July 1983 at St. Mary's Cathedral with Bishop Justin Driscoll officiating. His diaconate duties at St. Philip over the years inclluded liturgical roles at Mass, baptisms, funerals, being coordinator of CCD, eucharistic visits to the sick in homes, hospitals and care centers for the aged, and preaching at Napoleon, Burnstad, Wishek and surrounding areas, evangelism work and counseling.

His wife, Hertha, died July 13, 1997. Over their lives, Howard and Hertha lived simple lives of service and self-sacrifice and tried to be Christlike in their compassion for the poor and underprivileged.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Frederica Hunkler ; two brothers, the Rev. Adam Hunkler , O.S.B., and Abbot Ignatius Hunkler , O.S.B.; one sister, Alice Ruffner; and two infant children.

Howard's living family members include six sons, Joe, Rogue River, Ore., Cyril, Fargo, Francis, Moorhead, Minn., John, Cape Coral, Fla., Bernard, Harvey, La., and the Rev. Jerome, New Rockford; four daughters, Madeline Gross, Buckeye, Ariz., Angela, Berkeley, Calif., Sister Marie (O.S.B.), Dickinson, and Cecilia Reetz, Bismarck; four sisters, Helen Harris, Bismarck, Mae Hunkler , Bismarck, Sister Mary Jane Hunkler , O.S.B., St. Cloud, Minn., and Fran Roehrich, Bismarck; and one brother, Lawrence Hunkler , Hayward, Calif.

In lieu of flowers, Howard's family would appreciate Mass requests or memorials to St. Philip Neri Church of Napoleon.
