EXPLOSION KILLS SIX AT GUNCOTTON PLANT
One of Worst Accidents Occurs Wednesday
Morning as Employees Make Change of Shifts

One of the worst fatalities that has occurred at any of the munitions plants in Cameron county for several months was that at the Howard Smokeless plant of the Aetna Explosives Company at 7:20 o'clock yester day morning. Six men received injuries from which they died, two of them being killed instantly. The Solvent Recovery building was the first to let go and was reduced to splinters and ashes by explosions and fire and the Pyro Cotton storage building was slightly damaged by fire in the interior. Every man in the Solvent Recovery building was killed, making it one of the most deplorable accidents in the history of Emporium.
The victims, all residents of Emporium, were as follows:
GEORGE HENRY SMITH, aged 47 years; leaves wife and five children.
SECONDO Ricci, aged 23 years; killed instantly.
ALBERT HOUT, aged 29 years; leaves a widow.
TONY RICCI, cousin of Secondo Ricci; killed instantly.
      LUIGI GABRIEL.
The accident happened at the time the men were changing shifts. The two buildings were widely separated, and how they could let go simultaneously is a question that puzzles many. It is stated the Riccis were instantly killed. Three of the others lived but a short time. John Sanford was the last of the six to succumb. He died at 7:20 last evening.

VICTIMS OF ACCIDENT ALL LAID TO REST
Services Conducted in the M.E. Church for
One and Five in St. Mark's
All of the victims of the deplorable accident at the Smokeless plant Wednesday morning, March 14, were laid at rest in near by cemeteries last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Many of the friends of the deceased were in attendance at the obsequies and followed the remains to their last resting places. Thus far the direct cause of the accident has not been ascertained.
GEORGE H. SMITH, aged 49 years, was born at Brookville, Pa. He came to Emporium in 1916, and erected a modern home on Seventh street. He was a good citizen, steady and reliable. He is survived by his widow and five children, namely, Norman, Catherine, Ernest, Evelyn and Floyd. His mother, of Oil City; three brothers and three sisters also survive.

ALBERT CHARLES HOUT was aged 29 years, four months and 29 days, and was born in Emporium. With the exception of a brief employment at Sinnamahoning he had resided here all of his life. He is survived by his widow; his father, Michael Hout; three brothers, Joseph and Lawrence, at home, and Fred, who is with the United States Regulars on the Mexican border. His funeral was held Saturday morning, with services at St. Mark's church and interment in St. Mark's cemetery. He was an exemplary, industrious young man, and in his demise the community loses a promising, useful citizen.

JOHN SANFORD was born on West Creek, Cameron county, and was aged 58 years, 11 months and 15 days. He is survived by three children, Mrs.
Florence Massin of North Bend; Phoebe and Harry Sanford. The funeral took place Friday afternoon, with services at the M.E. church and interment in Newton cemetery. Mr. Sanford had many friends in town who mourn his demise. He was well liked by those who knew him best, and his death is a distinct loss to the community.

SECONDO RICCI, aged 23 years, and GENNARO AMARILLO, aged 21, were born in Italy. Their funerals took place on Sunday, with services in St. Mark's church and interment in St. Mark's cemetery.

GABRIEL SANSOE, aged 61 years, was also born in Italy, and came to this country several years ago.
