    1. [S63] Staff, Stone Funeral Home, Inc, (Name: Name: Stone Funeral Home, Inc.; Location: Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan, United States; Date: 02MAR2022;;), Riley, Loius "Bud".
Louis Glen “Bud” Riley, 81 of Petoskey, Michigan, left this earth on June 7, 2023 holding the hand of his adoring daughter. Bud passed away 5 days shy of his 82nd birthday, following in the footsteps of his wife who passed away two months prior, 5 days shy of her birthday.

Son of Elden and Lucille (Metivier) Riley, Louis was born on June 12, 1941 in Petoskey. He graduated from Petoskey High School with the Class of 1959. Louis enlisted with the United States Army as a Missile Crewman on August 31, 1961, and was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

On June 9, 1962, he married Mary Alice Daniel in Petoskey at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. They were best friends and were rarely apart during their 60 years together.

Following his discharge with the US Army, Bud and Mary returned to Flint, Michigan so Bud could attend barber school. He worked as a barber in Traverse City and it was there that Bud and Mary started their family. Unable to have biological children of their own, they opened their hearts and home to two adopted children; Mark in 1970 and Susan in 1972. No one would have ever known the difference; they loved their children immensely and couldn’t have been prouder. The Riley family returned to their hometown in 1974 where Bud worked a short time with Top O’ Michigan Electric and then finished out his working years as a delivery driver for Northern News.

Bud’s greatest joy was his family and he was present at almost every event, large or small, for not only his wife, children and grandchildren, but also siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He had the kindest heart and loved to make people smile, cracking jokes right up until his final days. He enjoyed nothing more than being a grandfather. “Grandpa Bud” could be found in the stands for every one of their sporting events, home or away, proudly wearing their #24 on whatever Petoskey Northmen gear he could find. He was an avid reader, enjoyed puttering in the yard with this John Deere tractor, loved University of Michigan football and the Detroit Tigers.

Louis was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and volunteered at Brother Dan’s Food Pantry for many years.

He is survived by his children; Mark (Margaret Rea) Riley of Portland, Oregon and Susan (Brian) Sanderson of Petoskey, Michigan; his grandchildren Steven (Danielle) Behan of New Hudson, Michigan and Taylor (Brandon) Carson of Petoskey; his great-granddaughters Kendall Behan and soon-to-arrive Callie Ann Carson; and many nieces and nephews.

Louis is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Mary Alice Riley; father Elden “Si” Riley, mother Lucille Geiger, sister Patricia Patterson, and step-siblings Jean Omar, Peggy Brown, Janet Jergler and Robert Rebtoy.

Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Bud’s memory are asked to consider Brother Dan’s Food Pantry.

Since Bud was able to greet family and friends at his wife’s funeral just two months ago, no funeral service will be held. A private family graveside service will be held later this summer.

    2. [S63] Staff, Stone Funeral Home, Inc, (Name: Name: Stone Funeral Home, Inc.; Location: Petoskey, Emmet, Michigan, United States; Date: 02MAR2022;;), Riley, Mary Alice (Daniel).
Mary Alice Riley, 80 of Petoskey, Michigan, passed away on April 1, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Daughter of Herbert and Katherine (Mayer) Daniel, Mary was born on April 6, 1942 in Petoskey. She grew up on her family’s farm in Petoskey and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1960. Mary attended St. Mary School of Technology in Grand Rapids, Michigan to become a registered radiology technician.

On June 9, 1962, she married Louis “Bud” Riley in Petoskey at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. They were best friends and were rarely apart during their 60 wonderful years together.

Following their wedding, Mary and Bud moved to Danvers, Massachusetts while Bud was stationed at Danvers Army Base. Mary began her career as a radiology technician at the Danvers Hospital during this time. They returned to Flint, Michigan in 1964 so Bud could attend barber school while Mary continued her career. They then moved to Traverse City for a few years before returning to their hometown in 1974 where Mary worked in radiology at Northern Michigan Hospital for over 40 years.

Mary loved to play cards. It was not uncommon for her to play a heated game of “Peanuts” until 3:00 AM with her family, especially her sisters. She also loved sewing, gardening, and tending to her flower beds. She adored her family, especially her grandchildren. She spent many hours in the yard and on the swing set with them when they were young, and never missed a sporting event during their school years.

Mary was a woman of deep faith that was devoted to her family and will be missed by many. In Bud’s words, “she was a sweetheart”.

Mary was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Church, volunteered at Brother Dan’s Food Pantry and as a 4-H Leader for many years.

She is survived by her husband Louis “Bud” Riley; her children Mark Riley of Portland, Oregon and Susan (Brian) Sanderson of Petoskey, Michigan; her grandchildren Steven (Danielle) Behan of New Hudson, Michigan and Taylor (Brandon) Carson of Petoskey; her great-granddaughter Kendall Behan; her siblings Magdalen Skiver, Edna (Craig) Shaw, and Norm (Emily) Daniel; her sisters-in-law Joan Daniel and Ruth Daniel; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Katherine Daniel; and her brothers Carl Daniel, Charles Daniel, and Tom Daniel.

Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Mary’s memory are asked to consider Brother Dan’s Food Pantry.

A memorial mass for Mary will be officiated by Father Greg McCallum on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 11:30 AM. A visitation will begin at 10:30 AM.
