      OBITUARIES

John "Irish" Fadian, 80, a self-taught bagpiper who helped found the Cleveland Shamrock Pipe Band, died Tuesday at Fairview Hospital.

One of his proudest moments occurred in 1957 when the band won the All-America Championship at Iona College in New York.

He also was quite an entertainer without his instrument. He had an extraordinary memory and regaled friends with stories of his native Ireland as well as sports and history.

Fadian was born in Keel, Achill Island, in County Mayo.

He left school early to help support his younger siblings. One of his childhood jobs was in Scotland's potato fields, where he earned meager wages.

He moved to Cleveland in 1948 and assisted plumbers as a member of Laborers Local 310. He tutored other Irish immigrants to play bagpipes. He also played the melodeon and drums.

Fadian was a member of the West Side Irish-American Club and a founding member of the Cleveland branch of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart. He most recently lived in Fairview Park.

Fadian is survived by brothers, Michael and Gerard of Ireland and Tommy, Anthony and Martin of England; and a companion, Parnell "Peggy" Kelly.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Rose Catholic Church, 11411 Detroit Ave., Cleveland.

His body will be flown to Ireland.

Arrangements are by the Chambers Funeral Home of Cleveland.
