James C. Spoeri, ex-assistant attorney general
James C. Spoeri, 45, an attorney and a former assistant Illinois attorney general who specialized in consumer rights, died Thursday in Long Beach, Calif., of complications from leukemia.
Mr. Spoeri graduated from Marquette University in 1974 and Loyola University Law School in 1977. His legal career began with work on consumer rights cases in the Illinois attorney general's office, where he was employed from 1977 to 1986, in Springfield and Chicago.
In a case he argued before the Illinois Supreme Court, Mr. Spoeri helped establish a legal precedent that gave the attorney general's office the power to draw up "substantive" rules to protect consumers.
In the late 1980s, Mr. Spoeri had his own law practice in Chicago, specializing in class-action law-suits for consumers. he moved to California in 1989, but he missed his consumer advocacy work, said his brother Robert.
"He felt very strongly about what he was doing. It was a calling to help the ordinary people of the world, the consumers," said Robert Spoeri.
Other survivors include his wife, Darlene Legenski; his mother Rosemary; two brothers; and a sister.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Maloney Funeral Home, 1359 W. Devon Ave., Chicago. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Curch, 2324 W. Chase Ave., Chicago.
