Feds Crack Internet Kiddy Porn Ring

John Stith | Staff Writer
2006-03-15

Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez held a press conference in Chicago on Wednesday to announce the cracking of a child pornography ring. In all, 27 people in the United State, Canada, Australia and England were charged in connection with the ring.

The charges spanned across nine different U.S. Attorney districts and include possession, receipt, distribution and manufacture of child pornography as well as conspiracy and other offenses. The activities centered around a chat room called "Kiddypics and Kiddyvids" and seven victims of molestation were identified, the youngest of which was 18 months old.

Gonzalez said at the press conference:

The chat room in this case was monitored by "hosts" who established rules for participation, some of which it appears were designed to hide their illegal activities from law enforcement.

Some participants of the chat room used minors to produce images of child pornography and then made those images - including live shows - available to other members through the Internet. For example, according to the indictment announced today in Chicago, in the last year a defendant who used the screen name "Acidburn" allegedly produced live streaming video of himself sexually molesting an infant.

The behavior in these chat rooms - and the images many of these defendants sent around the world through "peer-to-peer" file sharing programs and private instant messaging services - are the worst imaginable forms of child pornography.

In Chicago, three defendants were charged with conspiracy to possess, receive, solicit and distribute child pornography in a seven-count indictment returned yesterday by a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Illinois. A fourth defendaant was charged separately in a related indictment. The conspiracy indictment against Brian A. Annoreno, of Bartlett, Illinois, Gregory J. Sweezer, of Aurora, Illinois, and Lisa A. Winebrenner, of Osceola, Iowa, alleges that they -- together with the other 24 individuals, all using screen names -- accessed the chat room from computers around the world and participated in the chat room through chats and file-sharing.

An investigation by ICE and Canadian law enforcement determined that, since at least April 2005 through March 10, 2006, Winebrenner, Annoreno and Sweezer allegedly conspired with each other and others to trade images of child pornography through their participation in the "Kiddypics & Kiddyvids" chat room. The other participants, while not charged in Chicago, face either pending child pornography charges in the United States or abroad or have already been prosecuted in Canada or England.

According to the Chicago indictment, the chat room was maintained by a "host" and various "administrators" selected by the host, each of whom had special privileges in administering the room, including establishing rules fofor participants and determining which individuals were allowed to participate. The primary host of the chat room allegedly was a user with the screen name "G.O.D." -- later identified as Royal Raymond Weller, of Clarksville, Tennessee, who was arrested on March 6, 2006 on child pornography charges in a criminal complaint in the Middle District of Tennessee.

The indictment alleges that administrators of the chat room included:

-- Winebrenner, who used the screen name "HumbleDuchess;"

-- "CuLeX," later identified as Jason Wilson, of Milton, Fla., who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography in a criminal complaint in the Northern District of Florida;

-- "Wharfrat," later identified as Michael Burns, of Reno, Nevada, who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography in the District of Nevada;

-- "Lord Newbie," later identified as Kenneth Fisher, of Charlotte, North Carolina, who was arrested on state charges in North Carolina;

-- "Fydei," later identified as Marcel Deslauriers, of Longueuil, Quebec, who was arrested and charged in Canada; and

-- "Sir_CP," later identified as a 65-year-old man from Mill Park, Victoria, Australia; and "DarcBiocode," later identified as a 22-year-old man from Stafford, Queensland, Australia.

As part of the conspiracy alleged in the Chicago indictment, some participants used minors to produce images of child pornography that were available to other participants, including by means of streaming video, which was exchanged privately through online instant messenger services.

For example, last year, Annoreno -- who used the screen name "Acidburn" -- allegedly used an infant identified as Minor A to produce live streaming video of himself sexually molesting the infant. Also in April 2005, "Big_daddy619" used four minors under the age of 12 to produce live streaming videos of him sexually molesting all four children, which he transmitted live, via the Internet, to other chat room members including Annoreno, who allegedly received the images.

The indictment further alleges that Winebrenner used a software program to destroy evidence on her computer that she possessed child pornography. On March 10, Winebrenner allegedly advised others through an online discussion to destroy any such images.

The conspiracy count alleges that on Feb. 11, 2006, Sweezer distributed two video images of child pornography to an individual whom he believed was a participant in the chat room, but who in fact was an ICE agent who had assumed the identity of a chat room participant to conduct the undercover investigation.

The indictment alleges that the chat room participants used security measures to conceal their activities and child pornography collections from law enforcement, including screening persons in the chat room, removing individuals suspected of being affiliated with law enforcement, prohibiting participants from soliciting any personal identifying information from one another, and using encryption and data destruction software to protect stored child pornography files.

Feds Crack Internet Kiddy Porn Ring

-- "CuLeX," later identified as Jason Wilson, of Milton, Fla., who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography in a criminal complaint in the Northern District of Florida;

-- "Wharfrat," later identified as Michael Burns, of Reno, Nevada, who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography in the District of Nevada;

-- "Lord Newbie," later identified as Kenneth Fisher, of Charlotte, North Carolina, who was arrested on state charges in North Carolina;

Frederick Thomas Kelly worked his way through the University of Wisconsin majoring in Semitic languages. He went on to the University of Chicago where he got his Doctorate degree and came back to the U of W where he eventually became chairman of the Semitic Languages Department in the College of Letters and Science. He took a trip to Palestine in 1909 and took man pictures there, using them later in his course on Geography and Archeology of Palestine. Many studies of the Jewish faith attended U of W and he had several rather large classes. Among his students also were many who were preparing for Theological seminary work and several became well known pastors in various denominations. He was a prolific writer and corresponded not only with his brothers and sisters but also with many of his nieces and nephews every week. He also had a Christmas book for each of them the finest available. Uncle Fred retired in June, 1931. He met his death at his sister and brother-in-law's farm where he was wheelbarrowing some potatoes he had just dug to the house. A bull struck him from behind and killed him.

above from Leroy Reese

In addition to the above I might add that some of the family called him Uncle Tom. I remember him quite well of course and still have some letters which he wrote to my father while he was on this trip to Palestine. On this same trip he visited other places including Cornwall and the Isle of Man and in these letters he describes his experiences in those places.

Ella Wilson Kelly and her husband were the means of many receiving an education. They helped a great many. Their home was home at college for quite a few who attended the University of Wisconsin. They were strong supports of the Wesley Foundation of the Methodist Church. Aunt Ella was a member of the official board there for many ears. After the death of her husband, Aunt Ella continued her many activities for many years. In later years we lived next door to her for five years and got to know how many groups she would help in many ways. Aver unusual woman who practiced her Christian faith as did her husband.

Aunt Ella and my mother Allie B. Richard Kelly had been friends in the Viroqua area prior to their marriages. In fact it could well be my mother who introduced Aunt Ella and Uncle Fred. If my recollection is correct, Aunt Ella was connected with The Teacher's Institute at Viroqua prior to her marriage. This I believe was a training course for rural school teachers.

George E. Kelly farmed all his life on County Trunk 0 in the north-western part of what is know as the Diamond Grove Community, Linden Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin. He owned a team of ponies that were of considerable interest to some of us nephews. They were always assumable willing workers whether hitched to a surrey or a milk wagon. Uncle George was also an early owner of a car and Aunt Carrie drove it with great skill. I remember a big "chandler" and later a much smaller "Whippet".

George was killed while working with George Wittman of Wittman Brothers Lumbering. They were chopping down a large pine tree. The tree fell the opposite way of what they had predicted. The butt end twisted around and hit Mr. Blessel in the stomamach. He fell and got up. When asked if he was hurt he said , "Yes, in my stomach." He didn't say anything further but began screaming in pain. The rest of the logging crew rushed to his side and John Wittman rode into St. Marys tto get the doctor. George was dead on their return, however. His body was returned to St. Marys by mail and a funeral was held at St. Marys Church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, December 16th. GERTRUDE KELLY BAXTER and her husband farmed on two different farms not more than a mile apart and about 5 miles southeast of Mineral Point, Wisconsin in Iowa County near the Lafayette County line. The first time they lived in Mineral Point was on the north side of Fountain Street next door to the Reese's Great Grandfather Julian's home. (My sister Gertrude Kelly was born in that house.) At the time the Baxters lived there Uncle Ernest and my father Will Kelly went into a partnership, purchasing a grocery store on High Street. Later Uncle Ernest bought my father out and ran the store himself. They moved back on the farm and stayed there until retirement when they moved to a house not far from the Congregational church on Maiden Street in Mineral Point. Aunt Gertrude was a favorite of many of her nieces and nephews and her brothers and sister too I think. I know that my father was very fond of her. She had a very firm faith and was active in the temperance movement. Her husband died while they were in California for the winter of 1948. Aunt Gertrude was instrumental in keeping the Kelly family together by having many family gatherings at their farm. aunt Gertrude was coming home from a Christmas dinner with her niece Mona Thomas when they were both killed in a car accident.

He came to Chicago with his sister Sarah in 1882. He came to America because in Ireland only the oldest son could inherit the farm. He worked for the post office. -------------------------------------- Excerpts from Historical Outline of the Phelan Family by Joan Jacobson He was an enterprising young man. Having come from Ireland as a teen-ager, by 1891 he was able to purchase a very solidly built stone and brick three-flat building at 2019 W. Monroe St., Chicago. In addition to his work as a postman - he made two deliveries for five days and one delivery on Saturday - he maintained without help his three-flat building. Early every morning, he had to shovel the coal for the furnace. Sunday was his only complete day off from work. After church, they would go for a trolley ride or have picnics in Garfield Park. The family also enjoyed summer band concerts. In those days, the gaslights left the rooms of the time in semi-darkness. The poor light made it necessary to have social gatherings during the daylight hours. When the relatives got together on Sunday, they played cards in the afternoon and then had an evening buffet supper. He retired from his duties as a postman amid quire a bit of fanfare. His early days of employment were recalled in a newspaper article: "As a testimonial of the high regard and esteem in which Mr. Phelan is held by his fellow employees, they arranged a splendid program for him at the Garfield Park Assembly Hall last Monday evening, which was attended by practically all the carriers, clerks, and supervisors their family and friends, and present Mr. Phelan with a white gold watch and chain and his lifelong pal and companion, Mr.s Phelan, with a basket of flowers." After he retired from the Post Office, he was still very energetic. He became a bank security guard at a local bank near Crawford and Madison Sts. in the neighborhood. In October of 1929, he called his wife and suggested that she come over and withdraw their family savings. The next day the banks closed and the country entered the Great Depression. In the evening, he and the grandchildren sat on the back porch where he told stories of Ireland and the little elves called Leprachauns.

He grew up in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, where he enjoyed acting in plays, playing the trumpet and the debating society. Everyone always said he was a future trial lawyer. He fell ill at the age of fourteen and fought a brave fight against cancer. He graduated from Croton-Harmon High School and attended the state college in Albany until he grew too sick to continue. He was very spirited and courageous throughout his long struggle. He passed away on February 16, 1976, at the age of 19, and his family misses him more than words can say. He always loved the family very much and he would be very excited about the reunion. (July 2000)
