2043 Remarks of Remembrance for Loretta Katherine Weissinger Spencer
Presented by John Theodore “Ted” Weissinger on June 26, 2008

The choice of those we get for siblings is made for us. Friends, on the other hand, are carefully selected based on their qualities we admire and their shortcomings we are willing to accept. Katie was the best of both. Her wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, and infectious laughter made spending time with her a pure joy. Whether we went on vacation or simply getting together for lunch, it was always fun being with her, and as we parted, we always looked forward to seeing her again.

But more than that, Katie had a combination of qualities rarely found today. She had strong maternal instincts and a profound sense of compassion. Her entire life was devoted to serving the needs of others… and she wouldn’t have lived it any other way.

While most little girls learn their maternal skills from playing with inanimate dolls, Katie honed her skills in real life by mothering her baby brother Larry. She doted on him as if he was one of her own.

Perhaps, Katie acquired her sense of compassion when she was a little girl. When she was 6 years old, a car hit her while crossing Sixth Street holding onto an ice cream cone from the Sweet Shop (sort of today’s Baskin-Robbins… only better). During her many months of recovery, she may have realized that when people are hurting and in desperate need of help, someone has to step up to take care of these needs. Her entire life and career were dedicated to doing just that.

While at Lexington Catholic, she met and fell in love with Jim Spencer. They proved to be inseparable and eventually got married and started a family of their own. I’d never seen Kay happier. But she wanted more. So in addition to her full-time job at night, she came home; cooked, and took care of her husband and 4 children; sometimes falling asleep over a load of clothes washing and trying to study; she then went to classes; and if there was any time left… grabbed a few hours sleep before starting all over again the next day. I remember when she graduated from Lexington Technical Institute in 1971. She stood so proud in her white, uniform, shoes, and heavily starched cap. She had finally fulfilled her long-sought ambition of becoming a registered nurse. She got to live her dream before retiring in 2001 after 30 years of working the graveyard shift at St. Joseph’s emergency room.

Jim and Kay recently celebrated 50 years of marital bliss(and they said it wouldn’t last). Many have wondered how they had kept from killing each other for over half-century. I believe I have an explanation.

Although they didn’t like to show it to the outside world, Kay and Jim shared a deep love and devotion for one another. It was evident to all of us who knew them that they formed an unspoken agreement early on in their relationship. You see, Katie’s job was to take care of everything… and Jim was to let her. I believe this arrangement was the foundation of an unbreakable bond that withstood the test of time. Serving others was in nature and she loved every minute of it.

Jim has written a heartfelt poem to his beloved wife. He has honored me by allowing me to share it with you this morning. It reads…

“Should you go first and I remain, one thing I’d have you to do:

Walk slowly down that long lone path… for soon I’ll follow you.

I’ll want to know each step you take, that I may walk the same.

For someday down that lonely road… you’ll hear me call your name.”

Katie you are loved by many… and will be missed by all!
