| 155 | Born in Malden Hospital Malden, Massachusetts. Baptismal sponsors Eileen & Jim McDonaugh. She loved to play her guitar and write poetry some of which was published in Ersatz a Raymond Walters College student literature magazine and in Vibrations the parish newsletter for St. Vivian's. ----------------------- Death byMary Kay Weithofer It's so hard to understand why. We know it will happen to all because we see and hear of it happening to someone everyday. But when the time comes for someone close, it's hard to accept and it's so hard not to cry. Sadness covers the earth but in heaven the angels sing. It's so hard to know how to accept it. ---------------Grandparents "Oldey but goody." How true the saying. There are no better people in the world than grandparents. They always have stories and smiles. They are willing to listen and to help. At the same time, they are both student and teacher, at the same time, learning and teaching. And even at times, they may seem out of it but when you need them they are with it. And that's what counts. --------------------------- Young Adult Focus Vol 1 Number 4 August 1977 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Her "Social" and "Selfish" Views by Mary Kay Weithofer Each week many of us face the same question: "What is that terrible cough you have?" After getting over the embarrassment, you have to consider: "Do I tell her or him I have cystic fibrosis, or do I just pretend it's a bad cold?" It's not an easy question to answer an, and no one can tell you how to answer it. But hearing how others handle if might help you. Personally, I have two views: one is a selfish view, the other a social view. I feel the more people that know about CF the better chance I have. If someone personally knows someone with a disease, he or she is more likely to give to research. The more money CF research gets, the better chance I have to live. That’s what I call my selfish view. On the other hand, if I ever meet a person who is coughing, I would want to know why. Yu have th right to know, because if might be a health hazard to you. This is how people feel, and they have the right to know. Don’t kid yourself that they don’t have the right, because it’s your personal business. If your private business affects the people around you, then they deserve to know about it. You have to learn to live with CF and I guarantee you that it’s not easy. I’m not telling you to walk around with a sign saying, “I cough so much because I have CF.” That won’t get you anywhere in the world. But if someone asks you “why”, why not tell them. They have the right to know, and in the long run it might help you. The most important thing to remember is that having CF is nothing to be embarrassed about. This is how people feel, and they have the right to know. Don´t kid yourself that they don´t have the right, because it´s your personal business. If your private business affects the people around you, then they deserve to know about it. You have to learn to live with CF and I guarantee you that it´s not easy. I´m not telling you to walk around with a sign saying, ``I cough so much because I have CF.´´ That won´t get you anywhere in the world. But if someone asks you ``why´´, why not tell them. They have the right to know, and in the long run it might help you. The most important thing to remember is that having CF is nothing to be embarrassed about. | Weithofer, Mary Kathleen (I9549)
